InsideOut: The M41’s Cross-Country Adventure

When I (Tony Chiaramonte) settled into Win Farnsworth’s awesome Freightliner for the 2,800-mile jaunt to Miami a week before the start of the Miami International Boat Show, miami-leaving I knew what I was getting into. This wasn’t my first time hauling a boat cross country from California to Florida, but I can honestly say I don’t know if any trip can ever top this latest one.

Why? Because when I started working at DCB in May of 1993, I was a 23-year-old dreaming about 20-footers. Never in a million years would I have guessed I would be towing a 41-foot DCB on a tilt trailer, but there it was—the all-new M41 Widebody. It was such a gratifying feeling to see the boat back there. That’s what kept me motivated during the not-so-memorable stretches of Interstate 10. miami-towing-bridge Well that and getting the boat in the water so we could show it off in Miami.

I managed to get myself in a couple of tight squeezes along the way—many hotel parking lots were never intended to host a rig like it. But all went smoothly en route to TNT Custom Marine in North Miami. John Tomlinson and the TNT crew took great care of us right away. m41-forkliftAfter prepping the boat for its East Coast debut at the in-water portion of the boat show, my focus shifted to demo rides for the five-day event.

A part of me missed being inside the convention center showing off the boats under the lights and alongside our counterparts in this business. We probably could have done a more formal debut of the M41 inside, but having the chance to partner with Mercury Racing miami-show1and showcase the capabilities of the company’s amazing turbocharged 1350 engines was unbeatable. It also was cool for potential customers, media and enthusiasts to see how the cat sits in the water and be able to get in and feel the boat in its natural environment.miami-show2

The only downfall to being outside in the water was that we had a couple of poor weather days. It rained all day Friday and Sunday was pretty windy so most of the demo rides we gave were on the first day—Thursday—and on Saturday and Monday. It was definitely cool to run the M41 in 3- to 4-footers on Biscayne Bay with the scenic Miami skyline as the backdrop.miami-show3

That brings me to my next part of the trip, the Florida Powerboat Club’s Miami Boat Show Poker Run. We—Winn, his wife, Melissa, his friend, Chris Kissinger, Dave Hemmingson and me—had a blast doing the poker run. It helped that I found I wasn’t going to have to haul the boat back to the West Coast. Chris, who works with Win, took on that lofty task of driving home after one of the coolest poker runs I’ve ever experienced.

First of all, boating in Florida is amazing. If you can afford to live on the water, you can literally boat 365 days a year. There are so many cool things to see and do—and all I really experienced was Miami and the upper Florida Keys. I can only imagine what the rest of the state offers.

But what truly made the run great was the organization and professionalism of the Florida Powerboat Club.miami_pokerrun1-small The club’s president, Stu Jones, is a class act, as is his entire staff. The Miami Boat Show run brings out all the major players and DCB was right there with them. What I liked best was that everyone was there to enjoy themselves. It’s not about racing or anything else; it’s about having a good time on the water.

Also, I was pleasantly surprised when we were awarded Best Catamaran at the awards banquet. That made the whole trip. We were hoping to win the Best Rigging award, but considering the mix of boats from the new 50-foot Statement to the new MTI catamarans, miami_pokerrun2-smallwe were flattered to receive the Best Catamaran plaque.

Judging by the award and the comments I heard throughout the show and the poker run, I think we earned a lot of respect from the East Coast world, which is what we were trying to do by taking the boat out there. Now the M41 is back at the shop getting a little service done. It’s next stop is much closer—Lake Havasu. Thank goodness. – Tony C.

InsideOut: One M31 Out the Door, Another to Follow

As promised, many of DCB’s ongoing projects will be spotlighted—from start to finish—in this column. So without further ado, check out a couple of the finished cockpit shots on the stellar blue and gray M31 Widebody.

m31-interior-0643 m31-interior-0645

In a span of a few months, the boat has been capped, received its final gelcoat touches and been rigged with twin Mercury Racing  HP700SCi engines. With the plush gray and black interior complete, the boat is being delivered to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., where it will frequent the Colorado River hot spot.

The orange, gray and black M31—ordered with a pair of turbocharged 1,350-hp engines from Mercury—is coming along nicely. In fact, the boat (shown here. . .

m31-orange-0616 after it was capped and sent to the interior shop for patterning) is in the process of being rigged. The windshield, rubrail and interior will be installed at the same time. Once complete, the stunning boat will be headed to Oklahoma.

Production also started on a new M35 Widebody, which will receive twin Mercury 1100s. Since the New Year, we’ve taped and sprayed the gelcoat dcb-3imageon the 35-footer and we’ve applied the final layers of the carbon-fiber/Kevlar lamination to the hull before putting the vacuum-bag infusion process to work.

dcb-layup

As usual, the process is going smooth and we can’t wait to show you the polished version of the deep blue graphics. As you can see, the hull was pulled from the mold recently and the boat is ready to be color-sanded and capped.

First Test. . . M41 Widebody

Written by: Jason Johnson – Speed on the Water

After a full year of building the highly anticipated M41 Widebody, Dave’s Custom Boats (DCB) dipped the boat in the water for the first time on Friday afternoon at San Diego’s J Street Marina. Company founder Dave Hemmingson e-mailed a handful of images this evening after a few hours of running the 41-foot catamaran in the bay and out in the Pacific Ocean. Needless to say, he was ecstatic.

After a day of testing the new M41 Widebody, the energy level at Dave’s Custom Boats is out of this world. Calling the M41 Widebody an “absolute home run,” Hemmingson said the boat, which is powered by twin Mercury Racing 1350 engines, reached a top speed of 170 mph around 6,200 rpm during the first day of testing. He added that the catamaran “has lots left in her” since they didn’t want to push the boat too hard its first time out.

DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte said he’s never been in a boat that was so amazing right off the trailer.

“Seriously this boat is rock-solid at any speed—it’s so nice,” Chiaramonte said. “We ran it up to 170.4 mph with a pair of Mercury Racing 17”x41” propellers turning in. We tried a couple of props, but we were really out there to get a feeling for what the boat can do. There were some 3- to 4-footers and good crosswind in the ocean today, and it handled all of it perfectly.”

Chiaramonte said DCB will be taking the boat to Arizona’s Lake Havasu in the next couple of weeks to dial it in more and turn it over to its proud owner, Win Farnsworth.

InsideOut: Almost Time to Unwrap the New M29

For this, the second edition of DCB’s new “InsideOut” column, let us first wish everyone Happy Holidays. We’ve had a busy few weeks since Thanksgiving, including applying the tooling gelcoat to the new M29 Widebody.

m29-1020

m29-1096After finishing the tooling, waxing it and applying the tooling gelcoat, it’s time to complete the deck mold for the 29-foot catamaran. The lamination process takes about a week to complete as three ounces of fiberglass mat are applied each day, followed by an infusion of another 15 ounces. With the mold caging complete, the deck mold should be popped this week. The gelcoat application will start for hull No. 1 soon after that. It won’t be long until the twin Mercury Racing OptiMax 300XS-powered M29 will be on the water. The second model will feature twin Mercury 565 engines.

Things are moving along nicely for the M41 Widebody as well. Just last week, Lugo Manufacturing stopped by to test fit the tilt trailer. lugo-m41-0146Watching the beautiful 41-footer go up on its side was a little unnerving especially since it was the first DCB to be on a tilt trailer, but it had to be done to make sure the bunks and everything else were 100 percent. The trailer is back at Lugo for a couple of tweaks and from there it will be torn down, sandblasted and painted silver and charcoal to match the boat.

m41-0020The rigging is nearly complete for the M41 Widebody; in fact, as soon as the tailpipes and a couple of minor accessories arrive, we should be all set. Ideally the boat will be water-test ready before the end of the year. Soon enough it’ll be time to haul the boat to Florida for the Miami International Boat Show in February. Expectations are high for the 41-footer and there’s no doubt it’s up to the challenge. Even such things as the convenient switch buttons for the gull-wing-style engine hatches are trick in the M41.

m41-0046

And here’s a quick update on the two M31 Widebody models that are moving through the shop. The vibrant blue and gray 31-footer is on its way to be rigged with a pair of Mercury HP700SCi engines.

bluem31-0228

The interior and windshield for the boat will be completed at the same time.

The hull for the other M31, which will be powered by twin turbocharged Mercury 1350 engines, was recently popped from the mold.

orangem31-0943

Since then, it has been flipped over for blueprinting, the process that includes making sure there aren’t any inconsistencies on the running surface.

InsideOut: An “M” Series Trifecta

With a stronger emphasis on the DCB website, one of the things we’ll be doing is posting updates on the happenings from inside and out of the shop. So, for the very first post in the “InsideOut” column, it’s fitting to begin with the stunning M41 Widebody.

You’ve probably seen the photos of the 41-foot catamaran coming together from the tooling to the molds to the pre-rigging phase, now here’s a look at we’ve been up to with the showpiece. The photo below

shows the fully capped boat ready for its turbocharged Mercury Racing 1350 engines. And the remaining photos provide snippets of the engines, drives, hardware and interior on the boat, which features Class-A Surfacing technology.

DCB’s next new model—the M29 Widebody—is coming along nicely as the plug is currently being set up for production on the fourth boat in the popular M Series. Although it’s still a work in progress, the photos included give you a closer look at the tooling progress.

We’ve also got two M31 Widebody models in the works, one with a pair of Mercury Racing HP700SCi engines and another with twin Mercury 1350s. We recently finished the capping on the colorful blue boat with the 700s to create a seamless appearance.

It takes roughly a full week to cap and blend the gelcoat colors on our 31-footer, although the complete color-sanding process and transom finish work adds a few weeks on top of that.

The M31 with the 1350s is now in the spray booth getting its radical orange, black and silver graphics. The photos of this boat show the boat being taped off for the gelcoat application as well as the silver gelcoat being sprayed and the double carbon-fiber/Kevlar layer being laid down. In one of the images, you can see the rendering of what the boat is going to look like once it’s finished.

DCB Gearing up for Monster Bash Poker Run

For the fourth year in a row, Dave’s Custom Boats owners and company representatives will join the fun at the Monster Bash Poker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., for a few days after Halloween (Nov. 1-3).

See our Photo Gallery from the Poker Run here!

Presented by LakeRacer and Teague Custom Marine, the Monster Bash Poker Run seems to get better each year and we’re expecting nothing less from Thursday night’s open house reception, Friday’s fun run and welcome party, and Saturday’s five-stop poker run, which is followed by the always-entertaining costume cocktail party.

Taking place at the Nautical Beachfront Resort,  the event supports the Lake Havasu Food Bank, with a percentage of the poker run jackpot being donated along with participant nonperishable food donations.

Attending the Monster Bash Poker Run for the first time is Steve Ossakow, who lives in Canton, Ohio but keeps his M35 with twin Mercury Racing  1350 engines in Havasu at the Island Storage & Marine and Islander RV Resort. Ossakow said he’s excited to make the trip out to Havasu in what should be a beautiful time of year.

“I can’t wait to use my boat again,” said Ossakow, who traded in his F32 with twin Mercury HP700SCi engines for the M35 (the silver and blue one featured at the Miami International Boat Show). “We had engine problems our last time out, but they’ve since been sent back to Mercury Racing and rebuilt just in time for the poker run. I have to thank my dealer, Dave Hardgrove of North Coast Performance Marine , for all of his help, as well as the folks at the Islander. They offer great service and take good care of my boat.”

In 2009, Lake Racer’s Jim Nichols started the Monster Bash Poker Run to encourage boaters who may feel like the Desert Storm Poker Run no longer accommodates their boat. The event is limited to boats 35 feet and under with special invitation to larger boats who provide support for Lake Racer events. We hope to see you there.

2012 DCB Regatta Gallery

DCB Owners Enjoy a Winning Regatta

Between clientele who have been to every one and those attending their first gathering of Dave’s Custom Boats owners, the consensus was the same for the ninth annual DCB Regatta in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., at the end of September. Another winner.

DCB owners Rob Blair and Dave Hemmingson welcomed more than 50 enthusiastic customers to the Nautical Beachfront Resort for the Friday night kick-off party following a day of registration and fun outings to places such as Pirate Cove Resort and Havasu Springs Resort.

On Saturday, the helicopter photo shoot, lunch stop, raft-ups and other activities kept boaters busy from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then, embracing the all-sports tailgate theme, quite a few regatta participants went all-out at the banquet sporting their favorite team jerseys or, if you’re Brandon Allen, your favorite team from a movie—the Average Joe’s from “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.”

Allen, who lives in San Diego and owns Lime Time, a 2002 F34 catamaran with twin Mercury Racing HP525EFI engines, took home the male best dressed prize—April Lamb won the female contest for her Minnesota Vikings pride. Although he didn’t bring his boat this year, Allen had a great time running in his friend Ken Leipper’s Mach 26.

“This year’s regatta was a blast,” said Allen, who has attended every regatta. “I think moving the event date back like DCB did a couple of years ago has made it more enjoyable since it’s not incredibly hot. Adding the party themes has made it fun as well. The DCB club is like a family so it’s like a big reunion each year.”

Owners of Stacked Deck One-Six—an F32 with a pair of 1,200-hp engines from Teague Custom Marine —the Teague family kept it simple by sporting their Team AMSOIL offshore race team jerseys during the banquet. Engine builder and industry icon Bob Teague throttles the Team AMSOIL Skater. His wife, Andrea, and kids, Cherilyn and John, make quite the team in the office and on the water. Regular regatta attendees, the Teagues enjoyed themselves as usual.

Cherilyn Teague was impressed with the variety of boats—old and new—covering the entire DCB lineup. She said the prizes also stood out. From the 47-inch TV and Macbook laptop to the iPads and product from regatta sponsors, the giveaways were more impressive than ever.

Arguably one of the most stunning DCB models of the event was the deep-blue M31 Widebody with twin turbocharged Mercury Racing 1100 engines owned by Brad Macaulay of Kelowna, British Columbia. Macaulay made the 3,600-mile roundtrip from Canada for his first DCB Regatta.

“The event was great—it was definitely worth the drive,” said Macaulay, who owned three boats from Howard Custom Boats before getting the M31 this year. “I had a ton of fun with all the folks from DCB and the other DCB owners. I’ve got to give a special thanks to Rob Blair, Tony Chiaramonte and Paul Miller, and Dave and the entire crew of course, for showing me such a good time.”

For the valued DCB customers who would like to purchase aerials or other photos of their boat and crew from the event, check out: Todd Taylor Images - Guest code: DCB 2012 Regatta or #16100

To check out many more images from the event, enjoy the 2012 DCB Regatta photo gallery here. Owners are welcome to send in some of their favorites, too, and we’ll add them to the gallery! family@dcbperformanceboats.com.

Latest m31 to hit the water

We just finished the final touches on this incredible m31 Friday evening. . . Water tested, polished up, and ready for delivery!

dcb m41 ready for rigging

When the images popped into my inbox on Sunday evening, I was quite surprised to see the new M41 Widebody catamaran from Dave’s Custom Boats (DCB) in one piece and ready to move onto the next phase of construction.

Dave’s Custom Boats’ all-new M41 Widebody is ready to be rigged with twin turbocharged Mercury Racing 1350 engines. But I was even more surprised when DCB’s Dave Hemmingson told me that the 41-foot catamaran weighed just 3,900 pounds between the bare hull, inner liner and fuel tanks. Hemmingson said the full epoxy/carbon boat weighs about the same as one of the El Cajon, Calif., company’s M35 Widebody models, adding that the 41-footer is “ridiculously strong.”

“This boat is amazing—the Class-A Surfacing is incredible,” Hemmingson said. “I mean every square inch of this boat is flawless. You can see reflections in the surface that you can’t imagine. It’s like I can’t believe a boat can be this straight.”

Hemmingson didn’t put a timetable on when the boat, which will be powered with Mercury Racing 1350s, will be finished, saying only that the goal is to get the boat perfect. He informed me that the second M41 Widebody will be going into the molds this week, and that the company is beginning construction of the M285 Widebody as well.

DCB takes down desert storm

Article By: RiverDave Part 1 of 2

It’s sort of taboo in this day and age to talk about “1st to Card Stop One” because as we all know a poker run is certainly not a race. As a matter of fact in this years Desert Storm at least one “team” is going to quietly get disqualified for treating it as such. As poker runs evolve more and more are incorporating a “Shoot Out” to detract from the friendly and sometimes not so friendly competition of first to the card stop.

Overall the new formats will increase safety of the events, as well in theory provide a better show for the spectators as Huge horsepower rigs, both piston and turbine driven, unleash all they have in a mile long course. In a controlled environment and a shorter 1 mile course it should be easier for the spectators to get a better view of the action as well.

RDP has never been known to be politically correct though, and while the events are evolving this years Desert Storm and the chatter leading up to it had that same competitive vibe with respect to the infamous “Wozencraft Insurance Card Stop 1.” In short it’s not my job to create the news, or judge it, or alter it, I’ve always viewed my position to attend the event, and more or less tell it like it is..

As the boats left the dock there was a lot of excitement in the air at the Nautical , especially in the turtle bar where I had perched myself. As I sat at the bar drinking an Iced Tea (surprisingly enough) in pleasant company, with one of my board members “Hammer” and Dave Hards from Imco, the text messages start rolling in from the usual suspects. A lot of higher profile boaters that were either not running this year, or unable to attend. To save you the suspense the texts all read the same “Text me who is 1st to the card stop as soon as you know.”

In years past there is always confusion, controversy, and even sometimes arguments of who is actually first. The idea being that it isn’t a race, there is no finish line so how do you call it? Especially sometimes when it’s close? This year I had three sets of eyes on cardstop one ready to report who was 1st. Devin Wozencraft, my wife Stacy Johnson, and Jason from Ultra Boats AZ.

From the videos I’ve seen from on the internet there was quite a bit of jockeying going on down the lake, some pulling ahead, some falling behind. Ultimately two of my three sets of eyes would give the nod to Tony C. in the green twin 1350 M-31 as entering the card stop area first and fastest. One of my set of eyes was leaning towards CRC. RDP “officially” gave the nod to DCB based on the 2 out of 3 vote.

It should be noted “Fastest Boat” during the Poker run would definitely be Gary Smith in Predator, he pulled hard on everyone during the fastest sections of the course, but ultimately had an ignition shut down on one of his motors three times during the run which ultimately ended up hurting a motor. In the life of the fast lane though it doesn’t matter what happened up the lake (which had to be in the 190′s?), it matters who finishes. On the technicality Gary was in fact first to the card stop to pick up his cards as the Green DCB overshot it, CRC did not stop for their cards.

I ran into Dave Hemmingston at “The Turtle” after the poker run, and he was amped to say the least. To say this has been a long time coming is an understatement. I asked Dave what they had changed from last year on the 1350 green boat to pull out being number one this year. He mentioned they switched from Merc 39′s to 41′s and they had “Hot Rodded” the drives a bit, which puts this Green Machine in the mid 180′s still bouncing on the Rev Limiters.

As an honorable mention in group “B” (which I’m sure that is the wrong terminology for the actual Desert Storm groups) Tony Lombardi in his blue Teague Powered / Barrett Custom Marine “dialed in” DCB F32 was first to the card stop as well in his group!

Next up, the Shoot Out!
