Miami Boat Show 2013

We are making headway on our road trip to Miami this year. . . We are very excited to be showing the ALL NEW M41 in the water where this boat definitely shows best. If in the Miami area, come check us out and see this beauty for yourself! We will be located at the Sea Isle Marina Slip# 415 and also showing in Mercury’s Slip#211.

Here’s some quick info on the boat show. . .

First Test. . . M41 Widebody

Written by: Jason Johnson – Speed on the Water

After a full year of building the highly anticipated M41 Widebody, Dave’s Custom Boats (DCB) dipped the boat in the water for the first time on Friday afternoon at San Diego’s J Street Marina. Company founder Dave Hemmingson e-mailed a handful of images this evening after a few hours of running the 41-foot catamaran in the bay and out in the Pacific Ocean. Needless to say, he was ecstatic.

After a day of testing the new M41 Widebody, the energy level at Dave’s Custom Boats is out of this world. Calling the M41 Widebody an “absolute home run,” Hemmingson said the boat, which is powered by twin Mercury Racing 1350 engines, reached a top speed of 170 mph around 6,200 rpm during the first day of testing. He added that the catamaran “has lots left in her” since they didn’t want to push the boat too hard its first time out.

DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte said he’s never been in a boat that was so amazing right off the trailer.

“Seriously this boat is rock-solid at any speed—it’s so nice,” Chiaramonte said. “We ran it up to 170.4 mph with a pair of Mercury Racing 17”x41” propellers turning in. We tried a couple of props, but we were really out there to get a feeling for what the boat can do. There were some 3- to 4-footers and good crosswind in the ocean today, and it handled all of it perfectly.”

Chiaramonte said DCB will be taking the boat to Arizona’s Lake Havasu in the next couple of weeks to dial it in more and turn it over to its proud owner, Win Farnsworth.

DCB Gearing up for Monster Bash Poker Run

For the fourth year in a row, Dave’s Custom Boats owners and company representatives will join the fun at the Monster Bash Poker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., for a few days after Halloween (Nov. 1-3).

See our Photo Gallery from the Poker Run here!

Presented by LakeRacer and Teague Custom Marine, the Monster Bash Poker Run seems to get better each year and we’re expecting nothing less from Thursday night’s open house reception, Friday’s fun run and welcome party, and Saturday’s five-stop poker run, which is followed by the always-entertaining costume cocktail party.

Taking place at the Nautical Beachfront Resort,  the event supports the Lake Havasu Food Bank, with a percentage of the poker run jackpot being donated along with participant nonperishable food donations.

Attending the Monster Bash Poker Run for the first time is Steve Ossakow, who lives in Canton, Ohio but keeps his M35 with twin Mercury Racing  1350 engines in Havasu at the Island Storage & Marine and Islander RV Resort. Ossakow said he’s excited to make the trip out to Havasu in what should be a beautiful time of year.

“I can’t wait to use my boat again,” said Ossakow, who traded in his F32 with twin Mercury HP700SCi engines for the M35 (the silver and blue one featured at the Miami International Boat Show). “We had engine problems our last time out, but they’ve since been sent back to Mercury Racing and rebuilt just in time for the poker run. I have to thank my dealer, Dave Hardgrove of North Coast Performance Marine , for all of his help, as well as the folks at the Islander. They offer great service and take good care of my boat.”

In 2009, Lake Racer’s Jim Nichols started the Monster Bash Poker Run to encourage boaters who may feel like the Desert Storm Poker Run no longer accommodates their boat. The event is limited to boats 35 feet and under with special invitation to larger boats who provide support for Lake Racer events. We hope to see you there.

DCB Owners Enjoy a Winning Regatta

Between clientele who have been to every one and those attending their first gathering of Dave’s Custom Boats owners, the consensus was the same for the ninth annual DCB Regatta in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., at the end of September. Another winner.

DCB owners Rob Blair and Dave Hemmingson welcomed more than 50 enthusiastic customers to the Nautical Beachfront Resort for the Friday night kick-off party following a day of registration and fun outings to places such as Pirate Cove Resort and Havasu Springs Resort.

On Saturday, the helicopter photo shoot, lunch stop, raft-ups and other activities kept boaters busy from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then, embracing the all-sports tailgate theme, quite a few regatta participants went all-out at the banquet sporting their favorite team jerseys or, if you’re Brandon Allen, your favorite team from a movie—the Average Joe’s from “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.”

Allen, who lives in San Diego and owns Lime Time, a 2002 F34 catamaran with twin Mercury Racing HP525EFI engines, took home the male best dressed prize—April Lamb won the female contest for her Minnesota Vikings pride. Although he didn’t bring his boat this year, Allen had a great time running in his friend Ken Leipper’s Mach 26.

“This year’s regatta was a blast,” said Allen, who has attended every regatta. “I think moving the event date back like DCB did a couple of years ago has made it more enjoyable since it’s not incredibly hot. Adding the party themes has made it fun as well. The DCB club is like a family so it’s like a big reunion each year.”

Owners of Stacked Deck One-Six—an F32 with a pair of 1,200-hp engines from Teague Custom Marine —the Teague family kept it simple by sporting their Team AMSOIL offshore race team jerseys during the banquet. Engine builder and industry icon Bob Teague throttles the Team AMSOIL Skater. His wife, Andrea, and kids, Cherilyn and John, make quite the team in the office and on the water. Regular regatta attendees, the Teagues enjoyed themselves as usual.

Cherilyn Teague was impressed with the variety of boats—old and new—covering the entire DCB lineup. She said the prizes also stood out. From the 47-inch TV and Macbook laptop to the iPads and product from regatta sponsors, the giveaways were more impressive than ever.

Arguably one of the most stunning DCB models of the event was the deep-blue M31 Widebody with twin turbocharged Mercury Racing 1100 engines owned by Brad Macaulay of Kelowna, British Columbia. Macaulay made the 3,600-mile roundtrip from Canada for his first DCB Regatta.

“The event was great—it was definitely worth the drive,” said Macaulay, who owned three boats from Howard Custom Boats before getting the M31 this year. “I had a ton of fun with all the folks from DCB and the other DCB owners. I’ve got to give a special thanks to Rob Blair, Tony Chiaramonte and Paul Miller, and Dave and the entire crew of course, for showing me such a good time.”

dcb m41 ready for rigging

When the images popped into my inbox on Sunday evening, I was quite surprised to see the new M41 Widebody catamaran from Dave’s Custom Boats (DCB) in one piece and ready to move onto the next phase of construction.

Dave’s Custom Boats’ all-new M41 Widebody is ready to be rigged with twin turbocharged Mercury Racing 1350 engines. But I was even more surprised when DCB’s Dave Hemmingson told me that the 41-foot catamaran weighed just 3,900 pounds between the bare hull, inner liner and fuel tanks. Hemmingson said the full epoxy/carbon boat weighs about the same as one of the El Cajon, Calif., company’s M35 Widebody models, adding that the 41-footer is “ridiculously strong.”

“This boat is amazing—the Class-A Surfacing is incredible,” Hemmingson said. “I mean every square inch of this boat is flawless. You can see reflections in the surface that you can’t imagine. It’s like I can’t believe a boat can be this straight.”

Hemmingson didn’t put a timetable on when the boat, which will be powered with Mercury Racing 1350s, will be finished, saying only that the goal is to get the boat perfect. He informed me that the second M41 Widebody will be going into the molds this week, and that the company is beginning construction of the M285 Widebody as well.

DCB M41 Top Mold exposed

It was a great sight to see the M41 top mold being exposed for the first time today. All of us here at DCB are beyond excited about the M41 project and continue to run wide open to get it complete. As you can see in the pics below, the CNC machined intake scoops for the new 41 fit perfectly as DH fits and inspects.

M41 Update – First Build

We have been working around the clock day in and day out on the first M41. . . Below are some update photos in the process. 100% Full epoxy, 100% carbon fiber boat with Carbon / Kevlar included in the running surface areas. This boat is going to be absolutely amazing. . . Stay tuned for more info coming soon!

Desert Storm 2012

Desert Storm 2012 was a success for us here at DCB. Here are some photos from the weekend and we always look forward to the next!!! Enjoy!

DCB takes down desert storm

Article By: RiverDave Part 1 of 2

It’s sort of taboo in this day and age to talk about “1st to Card Stop One” because as we all know a poker run is certainly not a race. As a matter of fact in this years Desert Storm at least one “team” is going to quietly get disqualified for treating it as such. As poker runs evolve more and more are incorporating a “Shoot Out” to detract from the friendly and sometimes not so friendly competition of first to the card stop.

Overall the new formats will increase safety of the events, as well in theory provide a better show for the spectators as Huge horsepower rigs, both piston and turbine driven, unleash all they have in a mile long course. In a controlled environment and a shorter 1 mile course it should be easier for the spectators to get a better view of the action as well.

RDP has never been known to be politically correct though, and while the events are evolving this years Desert Storm and the chatter leading up to it had that same competitive vibe with respect to the infamous “Wozencraft Insurance Card Stop 1.” In short it’s not my job to create the news, or judge it, or alter it, I’ve always viewed my position to attend the event, and more or less tell it like it is..

As the boats left the dock there was a lot of excitement in the air at the Nautical , especially in the turtle bar where I had perched myself. As I sat at the bar drinking an Iced Tea (surprisingly enough) in pleasant company, with one of my board members “Hammer” and Dave Hards from Imco, the text messages start rolling in from the usual suspects. A lot of higher profile boaters that were either not running this year, or unable to attend. To save you the suspense the texts all read the same “Text me who is 1st to the card stop as soon as you know.”

In years past there is always confusion, controversy, and even sometimes arguments of who is actually first. The idea being that it isn’t a race, there is no finish line so how do you call it? Especially sometimes when it’s close? This year I had three sets of eyes on cardstop one ready to report who was 1st. Devin Wozencraft, my wife Stacy Johnson, and Jason from Ultra Boats AZ.

From the videos I’ve seen from on the internet there was quite a bit of jockeying going on down the lake, some pulling ahead, some falling behind. Ultimately two of my three sets of eyes would give the nod to Tony C. in the green twin 1350 M-31 as entering the card stop area first and fastest. One of my set of eyes was leaning towards CRC. RDP “officially” gave the nod to DCB based on the 2 out of 3 vote.

It should be noted “Fastest Boat” during the Poker run would definitely be Gary Smith in Predator, he pulled hard on everyone during the fastest sections of the course, but ultimately had an ignition shut down on one of his motors three times during the run which ultimately ended up hurting a motor. In the life of the fast lane though it doesn’t matter what happened up the lake (which had to be in the 190′s?), it matters who finishes. On the technicality Gary was in fact first to the card stop to pick up his cards as the Green DCB overshot it, CRC did not stop for their cards.

I ran into Dave Hemmingston at “The Turtle” after the poker run, and he was amped to say the least. To say this has been a long time coming is an understatement. I asked Dave what they had changed from last year on the 1350 green boat to pull out being number one this year. He mentioned they switched from Merc 39′s to 41′s and they had “Hot Rodded” the drives a bit, which puts this Green Machine in the mid 180′s still bouncing on the Rev Limiters.

As an honorable mention in group “B” (which I’m sure that is the wrong terminology for the actual Desert Storm groups) Tony Lombardi in his blue Teague Powered / Barrett Custom Marine “dialed in” DCB F32 was first to the card stop as well in his group!

Next up, the Shoot Out!
